Fast Facts: Five in a Boat

As a business that prides itself on developing carefully crafted strategy documents and branding decks for our clients, we thought it was about time that Five in a Boat shared a bit about its own brand with the world.

Before you ‘get on board with the best’, here’s all you need to know about who FIAB is, what we do, and how the agency came to be. Welcome aboard.

Who is Five in a Boat?

After reaching the peak of the PR industry as Global VP of Comms for HTC and Deezer, Jules wanted to use her expert knowledge and razor-sharp skills to start her own company; on 2nd April 2018, Five in a Boat was born. Jules remains Managing Director of the agency, as well as Chair of the PRCA Council, the world’s largest PR professional body.

The other five in the UK boat (for the time being) are king of content Dan, our all-round press guru and head of media relations Sophie, organisational extraordinaire and film buff Tori, and our most conscientious consultant, Hannah.

The FIAB team also currently spans Germany and the Netherlands, with Jan and Stephanie forming the German and Dutch arms of the business and with further growth planned in the coming months.

Although the team used to meet at offices based in Paddington, the pandemic has meant that FIAB remains working remotely for now. However, we don’t believe that we will ever be fully office based again, with Covid having changed the future of work for good.

What do Five in a Boat do?

We are an independent, no-bullshit communications consultancy, driving growth by building brand awareness, positive reputation and competitive edge for companies which are in the business of transforming lives through their technology.

Our clients span the sectors of gaming, VR, music tech, med tech, health tech, fin tech and education tech - and all are innovative and groundbreaking in their own way. From start-ups to corporate giants, we work as an extension of our clients’ teams, no matter the size of the business.

We also conduct pro-bono work for social justice projects we feel passionately about, and are currently working with an author who is raising awareness for homelessness through her own personal and uplifting story.

What are Five in a Boat’s values?

We are straight-talking and don’t believe in sugar-coating issues, even if this means rocking the boat.

We encourage people to be true to themselves and to celebrate uniqueness and individuality - one size most certainly does not fit all.

We want to inspire people to think outside of the box, to take risks (calculated of course) and to maximise opportunity. Failure is a learning experience.

We are highly independent, self-reliant and believe that while rules have their place, sometimes they are there to be broken.

What is Five in a Boat’s ‘why’?

Our mission is to educate and demonstrate that PR and communications as a discipline is at the heart of driving business growth. Our vision is to be a company that inspires businesses to treat communications as such - as a valued part of the decision-making process. Communications could not be more essential to the success of a business and we want a seat on the board.

What’s in store for Five in a Boat?

The team never sits still, and we are fortunate enough to have lots of exciting projects on the horizon. We can’t say much just yet, but 2021 is going to be big - we’re setting our sails further and wider than ever before, we are exploring new ground and we are introducing new programmes that we hope will drive positive change. Make sure you follow us on socials and stick around for the journey.
